Dear Sexton Mt. Families:
The basement of the Bend City library (the kid’s section) was one of the coolest places to spend a summer afternoon. When my mom was working, I’d often read for hours on the floor of the fiction section. The summer after 4th grade I read through all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. Another summer, it was My Friend Flicka and everything horses. I could get lost for hours in books. Now as a grown up, my favorite way to unwind is with a good book.
Friday night, I saw several of our students with the same dazed look as they enjoyed great books at Barnes and Noble. I hope that all of our students will find the joy of getting sucked in to a good story. Aubri enjoyed Dora the Explorer. Nash read through Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Sofia enjoyed Mo Willems books and Elijah had to consult an expert to determine which Star Wars book he should read first.
Getting kids hooked on books can be as simple as finding just the right book or as difficult as finding just the right book. Over the years, I’ve noticed some patterns for helping to match books to readers.
§ Read aloud to your child. From chapter books to picture books and a wide-range of non-fiction text, saturate them with the flow of language.
§ Take advantage of the marketing dollars bookstores have invested. Teach kids how to enjoy bookstore visit without breaking the bank.
o Find series that might be appealing
o Look at the covers of different books since so many are displayed cover-side out
o Enjoy free author visits
o Read staff recommendations
o Find “if you like this, you might also like…” displays
o Remind that books cost money and have value
o Make a list of all the books that seem appealing then head to the library
o Visit bookstores when you travel. From airport stores to tiny musty, dusty shops in seaside towns, there are always treasures to be enjoyed!
§ Remember that the MOST important part of reading is understanding what was read. Talking, writing, and thinking about the text can develop this. Attached to this newsletter today you’ll find information about what students should know and be able to do with different levels of text and what is expected as they show literal, inferential and evaluative comprehensions at different Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) levels.

Last week, record keeping sheets were sent home for the Winter Break Reading Challenge. Students were invited to record all they read between December 7 and January 7. I’m sure that many will have filled up the Blazer record sheet by now so feel free to list titles on additional pages. How many books our students will read in one month?
In addition to reading, writing, math, science and more, other things are happening here as Sexton Mountain School. This week, the Public Safety Department added a crossing guard to the intersection of 155th and Sexton Mountain Drive. Now that the sidewalk is complete along the west side of 155th, we expect more students to be crossing Sexton Mountain Drive on the school side of the road. Please use caution when entering and exiting school grounds as we adjust to this new pedestrian pattern. Also on the lines of safety, we are in the process of fine-tuning and updating our Emergency Procedures plan. If you have a passion for earthquake preparedness, please let me know. I’d love to have a handful of people to run ideas past.

Math in the Workplace and Daily Life-A Call for Parent, Grandparent and Extended Family Help
We are putting together a display for students so they can see how math is used in the real world. We need your help. Please think about how you use math in your daily life. Have someone take a picture of you at work utilizing math. Since we have people working all over the world in many different positions, I would guess we’ll get great pictures. Send the pictures electronically to Mrs. CB with a description of how you use math. The pictures and words will be used to show students how important it is to have a strong foundation in mathematics.

Wish List--These are little things or jobs that will make a difference to our kids. Feel free to send them in.· Scout/Researcher Needed-Scholl’s Heights is having an International Festival on January 25. If you have friends at that school and can tag along to the event to get great ideas for a similar event at our school, please let Mrs. Clemens-Brower know. · Volunteers to help with a Career Day/College Day later in the year. Would you be willing to share information about your career with students? Later in the year we are going to have a day when kids can learn about different jobs in our community and how different colleges a better matches for some careers. · Donation of liquid hand soap. With recess before lunch, we have supervisors making sure that students wash hands before going to the cafeteria. Hand washing is required by the Health Department. We’ve found that if kids get a pump of hand soap before they go into the restroom, they leave the restroom with cleaner hands. · Donation of $10 Powell’s or Barnes and Noble gift cards for Ms. Kimball to use as prizes for the Adopt a Bookshelf Program.
