Problem Solving Strategies, Busy Kids, and More-May 28, 2013


Dear Sexton Mt. Families:                                                                                       

I popped into the back of the Counseling classroom today as first graders were dramatizing the actions associated with Kelso’s Problem Solving Wheel.    Did you know there are nine different things students can try when they are having a small problem with a peer?  Students were able to show hand movements for each of the following:
§  Make a deal.  Think win-win.
§  Go to another activity
§  Ask yourself, “Who owns the problem?”
§  Walk away and let it go.
§  Share and take turns
§  Tell them to “stop”
§  Apologize
§  Talk it out using “I” messages.  I feel ________when ________.
§  Cool down then solve the problem

Kids were excited about showing the actions that went with each strategy. We hope that our students will grow up to be great readers, writers and math problem solvers.  We also hope they develop a range of strategies for dealing with frustration, disappointment or conflict.  During my observation today, it seemed that children recalled the back of strategies so hopefully, they will be able to apply these skills later if they need to.

We know that most of our students are creative, solution-oriented problem solvers.  Can you guess what problem children were attempting to solve by looking at the picture below?  Would any of the strategies listed above help with this problem?  Sometimes we do need to ask for help or different tools and I’m sure the kids trying to get the first ball stuck in the next learned from what didn’t work in this situation. 



In the upcoming weeks our students will be VERY busy as they wrap up end of year projects and continue learning.  Assemblies, field trips, Field Day, performances, Camp Learned A Lot and more will provide opportunities for student to practice the life skill of flexibility as it seems that there will be many changes to the schedule and routine.  We are going to finish strong!

§  A volunteer is needed to serve as a mascot Thursday, June 13 at 8:25am.  Costume provided.  Contact Mrs. CB if you are willing to delight hundreds of children just by showing up.
§  We would love to have a donation of a toaster for the staffroom.
