Local Option Levy, 4th Grade Music Program, Reminders-January 21, 2014

Dear Sexton Mt. Families:

The Beaverton School District has received nearly $3 million more in local option revenue than the original projected amount of $15 million. This is due to the actual tax collections received from November to mid-December 2013, an improving economy and property values. The purpose of the local option levy was to prevent teacher cuts, restore some previously cut teaching positions and address some extreme class sizes. The local option revenue does not restore multiple years of budget reductions ($142 million), but it does change the trajectory in a positive way.

Over the last few weeks, we have worked collaboratively across the District to identify teaching areas to be addressed with these additional local option funds. The funds will be targeted to reduce larger class sizes and increase student achievement. The process involved reviewing current class size and achievement data. Every school benefited from these additional funds.

This is another opportunity for all schools to prepare students to be college and career ready, and to meet the different needs of our students. We are grateful to our supportive and generous community as WE work together to help every student succeed.

At Sexton Mountain, we will be using these local option resources to provide an additional half -time teacher to support fourth and fifth graders in the area of mathematics. These resources are available to us for the second half of the year.

Thank you again for your generous support of our students.

Dr. Teresa Clemens-Brower
a.k.a.  Mrs. C.-B.

THANK YOU-We are so lucky to have an active and involved community willing to do special things for our kids.  When we work together, our kids benefit.
  • §  Thanks to Glenna Griffiths and Sandy Goff for helping prepare projects for Kindergarten Orientation.
  • §  Thanks to Jenny Tan for donating a tripod to Mr. Miller’s classroom.
  • §  Thanks to the Jenison family for the donation of cookies for our upcoming One School, One Book celebration.

Wish List-These are things or jobs that make a difference to our kids, teachers or school. Send in items or let Mrs. CB know if you can volunteer.
Donations of yarn or ribbon will be put to good use for an upcoming project.  Pieces as small as 6 inches will be accepted.  Please send donations to the office.
Donations of hand sanitizer will be put to good use in our computer lab.  Please send donations of hand sanitizer to the office.
We would love to have volunteers to help with our Canfield (Senior Citizen) Lunch Buddies on the last Thursday of every month from 11:15-12:15 as they have lunch with our second and third graders.  Contact Mrs. CB if you can lend a hand.
Donations for our teachers’ projects are still appreciated!
Staff will meet with teachers from several other schools on Monday, January 27 for Staff Development Day.  If you would like to provide cheese sticks, bananas or apples for the staff, it will be appreciated.  Because we will meet at Fir Grove, items should be delivered to Sexton Mt. by January 24 so they can be transported early in the day on Monday.  Please let Mrs. CB know if you plan to contribute.
We would love donations of full or empty small foaming hand soap bottles.  Please send donations to the office.
We would love donations of the empty pump shampoo bottles (like the ones you get at Costco). Feel free to send donations to the office.
·          The school directory is intended for Sexton Mountain Family use only.  Arranging play dates or birthday parties are examples of appropriate use.  The school directory should not be used for advertising purposes.
·          Pedestrians should cross 155th with the crossing guard at Sexton Mountain and 155th.   Thanks!
·          If your child will be late or absent, please call the attendance line before 8:30am (when messages are checked each day).
·          If you enter or leave through the back gate between our playground and 158th, please close and latch the gate behind you.
·          Dogs are not allowed on school property when students are present.
·          If you pick up your child behind the school, please do not use our neighbors’ driveways to turn around.  We’ve had a complaint that the extra wear and tear from parents is causing damage.
·          Please remember to park only in legal parking spots on 158th.  Parking too close to our back exit makes it dangerous for drivers to see children as they leave the school.
