Family Literacy Kick Off-February 4, 2014

Dear Sexton Mt. Families,

This year for our One School, One Book experience, Sexton Mountain will be reading The Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson. This is a story of young girl that moves from China to New York City in 1947. Happy about the name she chose for herself, Shirley Temple Wong sets off for new opportunities with her family in America. In the beginning, Shirley has a hard time fitting in and feeling part of her new Brooklyn home and culture. Then, through a new friend, Shirley discovers baseball, and her new home team, the Brooklyn Dodgers. She learns about Jackie Robinson, and feels a connection to his struggles and triumphs. As she grows up in Brooklyn, she learns from her experiences playing piano, baby-sitting and being a baseball fan, and she discovers that she can have a “double happiness” by celebrating her new American culture as well as embracing her Chinese heritage.

Each Sexton family should have received a copy of the book and a reading schedule (sent home on Monday, February 3rd) and on Thursday, March 13th we will have a celebration of culture and our common reading experience at Literacy night.  Stay tuned for details about this evening as well as fun family projects.

Fondly,

Dr. Teresa Clemens-Brower
a.k.a.  Mrs. C.-B.
Principal

THANK YOU-We are so lucky to have an active and involved community willing to do special things for our kids.  When we work together, our kids benefit.
  • §  Thanks to Naseem’s family for donating soap and hand sanitizer.
  • §  Thanks to the Vargas, Griffith, and Link family for volunteering to help with the yarn cutting project.
  •

Wish List-These are things or jobs that make a difference to our kids, teachers or school. Send in items or let Mrs. CB know if you can volunteer.
A volunteer is needed to assembly folders for Kindergarten Orientation.  This project can be done at home but the contents are too heavy to send home by backpack mail.  Volunteers would need to stop by school or let Mrs. CB know when a good time to drop off the supply box might be.
One more volunteer is needed to cut ribbon into 6 inch pieces.  This job can be done at home and can be sent home through backpack mail.  Please let Mrs. CB know if you can do this project.
Donations of hand sanitizer will be put to good use in our computer lab.  Please send donations to the office.
A volunteer with neat handwriting is needed to replicate several posters for us.  Let Mrs. CB know if you can do this.
We would love to have volunteers to help with our Canfield (Senior Citizen) Lunch Buddies on the last Thursday of every month from 11:15-12:15 as they have lunch with our second and third graders.  Contact Mrs. CB if you can lend a hand.
Donations for our teachers’ donorschoose.org projects are still appreciated!
We would love donations of full or empty small foaming hand soap bottles and empty pump shampoo bottles (like the ones you get at Costco). Feel free to send donations to the office.

Reminders
·           The school directory is intended for Sexton Mountain Family use only.  Arranging play dates or birthday parties are examples of appropriate use.  The school directory should not be used for advertising purposes.
·           Pedestrians should cross 155th with the crossing guard at Sexton Mountain and 155th.   Thanks!
·           If your child will be late or absent, please call the attendance line (503-259-7635) before 8:30am (when messages are checked each day).
·           If you enter or leave through the back gate between our playground and 158th, close and latch the gate behind you.
·           Dogs are not allowed on school property when students are present.
·           If you pick up your child behind the school, please do not use our neighbors’ driveways to turn around.  We’ve had a complaint that the extra wear and tear from parents is causing damage.
·           Please remember to park only in legal parking spots on 158th.  Parking too close to our back exit makes it dangerous for drivers to see children as they leave the school.
