We the People, Track Meet and More-May 27, 2014

Dear Sexton Mt. Families:

Beaverton voters passed the bond on last week’s ballot.  On Wednesday a parent asked if work would begin that day on the doors, roof and other areas specific to our school.  While it won’t be THAT immediate, we do look forward to the repairs and upgrades!  In the meanwhile, our teachers continue to teach and our learners continue to learn.

Students in fifth grade will be presenting information Wednesday evening at 6:30pm.  We invite families from other grade levels to attend if they’d like.  Students had a chance to present information to a panel of judges in Salem last week.   Following our fifth grader’s trip to Salem I received this message from one of the parents who had joined the group.   His words sum up the great learning experience!   Craig Wymetalek writes…

I just wanted to let you know how impressed I was with the We the People presentations that the 5th graders did at the State Capital….This field trip, and the presentations that the children did was an experience I don’t think the 5th grades will soon forget.  On top of getting to see the Capital, they had the opportunity to do mock “congressional testimony” in front of a panel of judges.  I was impressed with the knowledge that the 5th graders had about constitutional issues that many adults do not understand.  This was not just a surface level pamphlet recitation, but actual knowledge being put to use.  The children not only took positions on some of the issues, but had compared historical problems faced by the Founding Fathers with examples from present day.  Obviously, there had been some in depth discussion on some pretty complex constitutional issues prior to these presentations.

The teachers have done an excellent job with this program.  The children were clearly excited to be sharing their knowledge and they really enjoyed getting feedback from the judges.  Of all of the presentations I have seen in nine years at Sexton Mountain, this was certainly the best display of the children understanding complex ideas on an intellectual level rather than just reciting facts they learned.  If this program is not a regular part of the curriculum at Sexton Mountain (it wasn’t for my two older children), it should certainly be in the future.”

Track Meet-Some of our students got to attend a special track meet at Beaverton High School on Thursday.  They participated in a number of events in a day of celebration.  I left the event with a content heart thinking about how much our students have grown.  They tried new things and put in great effort.  We have an exceptionally hard working SRC team and a very special group of students.  Additionally, we have a number of fifth grade students who gain just as much as they give during PE time with their buddies.  Last week in fact two of our girls spent their allowance on a birthday book for a friend.  Listening to the teacher recount the story of the gift, givers and recipient flooded me with joy.  OUR KIDS ROCK!!

Fifth Grade Gift to School and Community-Our fifth graders raised funds through a range of projects this year and provided our school with a great bench.  It was installed just in time for families to enjoy during the carnival.

As an organization we try to reflect on our successes and challenges.  Teachers across Oregon were invited to participate in the TELL survey in March.  They were asked to share their perspective about time, facilities and resources, community support, student conduct, teacher leadership, school leadership, professional development, and instructional practices.  The information will provide us with a starting point to drill deeper in a continued effort to make our school an even better place.

It has been an exciting year with more great things to come.  Thanks for sharing your children with us!

Dr. Teresa Clemens-Brower

  • §  Thanks to Judith Yan for volunteering to help organize the supply room.  More volunteers are still needed.
  • §  Thanks to all of the 5th Grade Parents who were quickly able to change plans and drive to Salem for the field trip last week when the bus company sent smaller buses with fewer seats than expected.
  • §  Thanks to Toni Fisher, Kelly Jones and Lori Laraway for taking charge of the unofficial ballot drop boxes.
  • §  Thanks to Kate Kristiansen for bringing Sexton Mt. Spirit to special track meet for students at Beaverton High School last Thursday.  Our kids loved having a great place to enjoy lunch and having our school mascot join them for part of the day.  Check out news coverage of the event at:
