Family Literacy Night, Field Day and More--May 31, 2016

Dear Sexton Mt. Families:

After last week’s newsletter went out Deb told me I copied her slogan.   Her family is also focused on finishing strong during these last few weeks of school!  I would guess that many families are counting the days until vacation begins.  We have many exciting things planned in the upcoming weeks!  The big event this week is Family Literacy Night on June 2 from 5:30-6:30pm at the Beaverton City Library (Hall and 5th Street in Beaverton). Please bring your family and check out the range of resources available to enhance summer learning.    The simple act of reading, then talking about what was read, builds vocabulary, content knowledge, thinking skills and perspective!

Please schedule regular visits so that children will maintain their reading stamina throughout the summer.  Some families visit the library on Wednesday evenings or Saturday mornings in conjunction with a visit to the Farmer’s Market.  The music and produce provide great conversation starters for kids as well.

Students will also enjoy an extended time outside on Friday for Field Day.  There will be a range of activities for students to enjoy on Friday, June 3.  Thanks in advance to all the volunteers who will make this day special for our children.  Students should:

(1) bring water bottle clearly labeled with their name

(2) wear shoes for moving and athletic-type clothing

(3) wear a hat if they’d like

Now that Allergy Season seems to be in full swing, some families are bringing in the over the counter medications and signing them into the office so that supplies are on hand when kids need it.  Remember that all medications must be brought to school and signed in by an adult.

Our Volunteer Appreciation Celebration will be Friday, June 10.  We rely heavily on our volunteers for a range of things.  Students and staff will express appreciation for all you do.  Please plan on joining us in the cafeteria from 2:00-3:00pm for special performances and treats.

During the month of June we will be doing a CEREAL drive to benefit the Sunshine Pantry.  During the summer many children don’t get breakfast or lunch because schools are closed so local food pantries are called upon to support families.  Students are invited to bring boxes of cereal to help address the need in our community.  Other non-perishable food donations are welcome as well.   From the simple act of giving a smile to giving in other ways, focusing on the needs of others helps our students grow.

Great things are happening at Sexton Mt. School.  Thank you for sharing your children with us!

With Gratitude,

Teresa Clemens-Brower
Principal

Finish Strong, Summer Reading and TVFR-May 24, 2016

Dear Sexton Mt. Families:

Spring is a time when our focus is on finishing strong!  Before school Monday, a number of parents shared that families were starting the countdown.  Based on adult enthusiasm, I wondered if children would also have summer vacation on the mind.  As I visited classrooms, students were calm and quiet.  In every room, they were hard at work!  In Ms. Hiatt’s class, children compared seeds and bulbs.  Several classrooms reviewed the schedule for the upcoming week.  In other rooms students were charting how they got to school.  Kids were calm and focused.  It was a great start to the day!

This week Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue teams have been visiting our school with the goal of gaining familiarity with our building.  Uniformed public servants got to visit with kids too.  Whether it’s TVFR, THPRD, Beaverton Police or the Beaverton City Library, when outside agencies visit our school, we learn from one another.

We look forward to seeing students and families at the Beaverton City Library on June 2 for family literacy night from 5:30-6:30pm.  Conference rooms A and B will house special events for students.  It’s the perfect time to sign up for the summer reading program and to help your child get familiar with space.  We hope that children will be set for a summer of JOYFUL reading!  Check out the sites below for ideas on how to help your child read more.
Thank you for sharing your children with us!

Collaborative Communities Rock! May 17, 2016

Dear Sexton Mt. Families:

Our school is a special place indeed!  Our community comes together for kids.  I appreciate how collectively we care for one another, assume best intentions, and work to create a positive environment with children at the heart of our work.

Friday night a student asked me, “How did someone come up with an idea for THIS?!?!”  With both arms he gestured to the field full of games and inflatables.  His previous school didn’t have a carnival and he was sure that the magic he experienced (with so many coming together for the purpose of fun community building) was the BEST idea ever!  Thanks to Lisa, Samantha, Rebeca, Christie, Noel  and all who helped for creating such a special first school carnival for this young man.  He was not the only one impressed by your efforts!

This child-centered collaboration is evident in times of celebration and times of crisis.  Last week I shared some of the things I had noticed about how special our Sexton Mt. family is in how we work, communicate, learn from mistakes and encourage one another.   Since last Tuesday, the list of things I appreciate has grown and I have many specific examples of how we work together.  I started to make a list of all the things I’m grateful for since all those small things add up.  I realized that for every one thing I could remember, ten other amazing acts of kind collaboration had been accomplished quietly.  I realized that our school community comes together not to be recognized but because it’s what is best for kids.   Thank you for sharing your children with us!  Thank you for showing them how to care about others in our community.  It is an honor to work in such a special place!
