Field Day, Sing Along, Summer Learning Loss-June 20, 2017

Children had so much fun at Field Day today.  Thanks to Mr. Miller, Mrs. Lew and all of the other volunteers that made the day so special for our kids.  Thanks also to Mr. Taft and Mr. Hayhurst for arriving early to help set up.

In addition to Field Day, this week we’ve enjoyed a morning sing-along.  Kids have enjoyed reading the lyrics to different songs.

Finding fun ways for kids to spend time with text has been an ongoing project for teachers this year.  We hope that children will continue reading throughout the summer.  The charts below show assessed reading levels for two children from one year to the next.  Can you tell which child read daily over the summer and which one took a vacation from reading?

Thank you for sharing your children with us this year!  It’s been so exciting to watch them grow! On Thursday, June 22 we will start the day with a special assembly and end the day with a “Send Off Archway” for our 5th Graders.  At 3:00pm, students in kindergarten through fourth grade will line the walls of the main hall.  At 3:03, 5th graders will leave the cafeteria for their last lap around the school.  As 5th graders walk by, younger students and adults will do the silent Sexton Mt. Cheer (picture high arms and jazz hands).  Fifth graders will walk all the way around the loop and back to the cafeteria then younger students will be dismissed.

This may be an emotional day for some of our students and staff as we send off such a special group of children.  The children in fifth grade today will thrive in middle school and beyond!  They are inclusive, kind, solution-oriented and most of all, they support one another in positive ways!

Fondly,

Teresa Clemens-Brower, Ed. D.
Principal

Summer Reading Ideas

In the newsletter this week, we mentioned that we would be providing extra supports for some readers.  Ms. S'Moore sent out an invitation to some families today but the videos she included were too big for some mailboxes.

Some students will be invited to participate in a virtual book talks/conferences using the app called Seesaw
Here are some examples of the ways students might show their thinking about what they are reading.

Rain, Rain, Go Away-We Want Dry Kids on Field Day-June 13, 2017

Dear Sexton Mt. Families,

The best part about cold, wet weather in June is that kids are much more likely to forget that summer is just around the corner.  Kids are still engaged in the process of learning.  We will finish strong.

The worst part of cold, wet weather in June is that Field Day, and other outdoor events, take a little extra planning.  In order to prepare for Field Day this Friday, June 16, children may want to pack an extra set of clothing and shoes in order to be comfortable the rest of the day.

Fondly,

Teresa Clemens-Brower, Ed. D.
Principal

  •  91 Students are working below grade level in reading so we hope to provide extra summer support in order for students to continue to progress.  Ms. S’Moore will contact families regarding summer virtual reading conferences for identified children.
  •  We have 720 minutes of literacy instruction still to come between now and summer break.  We will finish strong!

Avoid the Summer Reading Slide-If two children end the school year at the same level in June, kids who read daily will return at a different level than kids who do not read daily.  Readers make about 2 months growth.  Non-readers lose about 2 months growth.
